‘Inglourious Basterds’ Scalps Rivals At The Box Office

Quentin Tarantino has had his biggest opening ever, and that doesn’t include the time he dated Kathy Griffin. His movie “Inglourious Basterds” was up against those annoying aliens from “District 9″ which was number one last weekend. We never got around to seeing “District 1″ through “District 8.” As for Tarantino, he sure knows how to act like an ass monkey in these videos, and now that he’s the box office champ, he’ll use the money to create a time machine to go back to 2007 and not shoot “Grindhouse.”

1. “Inglourious Basterds” $37.6 million
Would this movie have been as successful if it didn’t star Brad Pitt but Tarantino’s first choice, Larry the Cable Guy?  Larry already has movie war experience as he starred in “Delta Farce” that received an astonishing five stars out of 1000. Movie audiences were in the mood for a movie about American-Jewish troops hunting Nazis.  This was the feel good Jewish movie of the year, or as Mel Gibson calls it, “The worst movie ever.” It was Tarantino’s best opening ever, exceeding the $25.1 million haul for 2004′s “Kill Bill — Vol. 2.” The movies were similar in many ways except this latest movie didn’t feature an actor who likes to yank it until he dies.

2. “District 9″   $18.9 million
Sony’s sci-fi thriller “District 9,” slipped to second place. When it came down to it, folks wanted to see Nazis get killed more than they wanted to see aliens get probed.  This movie, with it hideous looking creatures on the screen, was based on the TV show “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”  The movie is still the sleeper hit of the summer which is a little different from “Land of the Lost” which was the sleep inducer of the summer. A new study just out last week says “Land of the Lost” is 57 % more effective than Ambien.

3. “G.I. Joe:  The Rise of Cobra,”  $12.5 million
Here is another military-themed movie in the top three. Whereas Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” targeted sophisticated  moviegoers, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” was aimed at people with serious head injuries.   The film should have gone with its original title, “Loud Explosions.”  Moviegoers were still interested in seeing the last big action movie of the summer. It has brought in $120.5 million since its August 18th release.  There’s already talk of a sequel which will be titled: “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra…In My Pants.”
