August could not come soon enough for most guys out there in Americaland. And that is because we will flock, one gender, under God, to the movies in mass to see what we hope to be the craziest WWII epic since the beach scene in Saving Private Ryan.
Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Inglourious Basterds, hits theaters nationwide on August 21rst, but there are already plenty of clips and teaser trailers rolling around on the interweb. (Clips: ONE, TWO, THREE). The film is already getting huge critical acclaim and a 23-minute scene in a basement bar has been called a mini-Reservoir Dogs and one of Tarantino’s most prized creations.
The movie is a remake of a 1978 Italian film about a group of American court-marshalled soldiers in WWII whose convoy is attacked en route to jail. The prisoners escape and decide to head to Switzerland to avoid Allies and the Nazis, and end up fighting alongside the French Underground on a commando mission.
Tarantino has re-imagined the story into a group of Jewish-American soldiers dropped behind enemy lines to kill Nazis, guerrilla-style. While far-fetched, it is apparently based on a true story of commandos in the British army who performed secret missions in hostile territory. There is also a converging storyline with a young Jewish woman, played by Mélanie Laurent, who seeks to avenge her parents death at the hands of the regime.
Tarentino has been working on the script for more than a decade, changing the story and trimming it down. In 2004, the script was still 222 pages (~3 movies in length). It debuted at Cannes in May and a retrimmed version will hit theaters later this summer. It has been called the closest thing he’s done to his cult hit Pulp Fiction and everyone and their Dad is waiting eagerly to see if it’s true.
